She told them to walk around their gardens, get an idea of the dimensions, listen for the sounds of nature and take note of the sun and shade patterns.

The survey of building and natural structure, called hardscaping, she said forms the "backbone of the garden." Still, each oasis of green and granite should connect through focal points like a statue, arc or walkway.

"Spaces need to relate to each other so the landscape can be experienced in a sequence," she said.

For Lou Ann O'Brien gardening is a wonderful, creative activity, that's full of surprises.

"I have all these islands and I'd like to connect them to create a private sanctuary, but I don't know how to do it," she said of why she attended.

She said she had to go home and think it through, but the journey and the bloom that is punctuated every spring begins and ends in the same place for her.

"I can go out in the garden and in ten seconds I'm in heaven," she said.

At Christine Kelly-Edelman's house, the success of her vegetable garden is coinciding with a necessity to groom the landscape the right way.

"I need a master gardener to help me," she said.

Often a refurbishing doesn't go as far as needed, Hoffman said, because it does not do a drastic enough change. Either way, spacing can be overlooked and create unwanted overgrowth.

"You need to know what a plant's growth maturity looks like because over time the right spacing will fill in," she said.

Otherwise, a good garden should be expressive of the garden owner, while improper scale definitely stands out. "Every little detail will show, so proportions need to be in balance," she added.

Yorktown's Pauline Chang seemed not so far along in her gardening credentials but she was certainly open to suggestion. She said she attended the forum to find out what she could do with an empty space because she wasn't sure what to plant there.

In Cortland, Marilyn Elie has her hands full with a new house. Gardening is a passion and she said she knows creating the right landscape means you don't elevate one sense over another.

"I do a lot of walking, looking and listening," she said. "It's my art."

Master Gardeners like Eleanor Hoffman are trained in horticulture by the Cornell Cooperative Extension and give talks on a wide variety of gardening subjects throughout Westchester County.

Landscape design for the beginner

by Linda Strader
Landscape design is complex, and that is a good reason why formal training is essential. However, if you have a good eye for design, you may do just fine with your Tucson yard. There are a few things to keep in mind if you decide to do it yourself, however, which at times may seem counter-intuitive.

First, unless you are going for a botanical garden theme, stick with a limited plant palette. One or two tree species and 3 to 5 shrub species are plenty.

Second, plant in groups. And preferably in odd numbered groups. Don’t speckle your yard with dots of different species of plants.

Third, if you decide to include boulders in your design, make sure to bury them by HALF. Yes, that sounds like a lot, but you want them to look like they belong there, not like they dropped from the sky. Boulders should also be placed in groups; either with plants or other rocks of varying size.

Not all plants HAVE to have a function in your garden, but they do play a role. They might provide summer shade; either on the ground which cools the air around your house, or against the side of your house, which is important for keeping your summer cooling costs down. Plants can also provide screening from your neighbors yard or of a view that is not too pleasant (such as pool equipment or your AC unit). They can increase the drama of a view, by framing the outer edges. They might provide food for you and wildlife to enjoy, or just a spectacular seasonal flower show outside your patio door.

Plants can deter unwanted guests, for example planting cacti under windows has been proven to reduce the chances of a break-in.

There are many more uses of plants not covered here, but they do so much more for us than just ‘be there’. Keep in mind that the need to be in nature is part of being human, and ‘nature’ may just be some potted plants on your patio or a beautifully landscaped back yard. Either way, the benefits abound.

This entry was posted on Sunday, November 7th, 2010 at 5:29 am and is filed under Desert Landscaping. If you do, I'm going to list some of the things good landscaping can do for you.

What's that? You believe you've heard that before? Well, maybe so, but bare with me because I've got something else in mind too.

All right, let's list some of them:
1.Gives curb appeal.
2. Adds value to your property.
3. Gets Aunt Sally to the front door without getting her shoes dirty.
4. Provides great outdoor living experience for big folks and deals with play activities for little ones.
5. Provides backyard security for dogs, pet pigs and chilluns. There are lots of others, but you get my drift.

Now, here's what I'm getting around to. My sister, Ellen, in Baton Rouge, is a psychologist during the week and capable wearer of many hats when she's not doing her profession, one of them being yard person. So out of curiosity, I asked her why she likes the yard and how does it fit in with what she does as her day job. She thought a minute ... and another minute. "Caw," as she calls me, "Let me ask you a few questions."

"Well sure, Beebo," as I call her, "Shoot!"

"First of all, you know how lucky you are to do what you do for a living, don't you?"

"Well, sure."

"How do you feel when you're outside supervising a job?"

"Well, I love it."

"Is it ever stressful?"

"How could it be on these pretty days?"

"How about the hot and cold days?"

"Still beats inside."

"How does it feel when you've taken a project from first contact through design and installation?"

"Well, seeing an idea become reality is great."

"Really satisfying isn't it? I feel the same when Doug and I plant flowers."

"I know you still do your own yard. Why, when you do yards for a living?"

"Well, because it makes me feel good to see it go from scruffy to nice-looking in 35 minutes and know I did it myself, I suppose."

"The gratification thing again."

"And when you're stressed out, does the yard unstress you?"

"Like I tell people, coming home to your nicely landscaped home just feels good, secure, but look Beebo, enough questions. I want to know what landscaping has to do with psychology. Gimme some answers."

"Well, Bro, I think you just gave some answers yourself. Now, can you give me some answers on what to do with that fig vine you recommended that's about to take over our garage?"

Is home landscaping different than other landscaping?

What are the best plants for you: Landscaping Plants Galore

One of the key aspects of landscape, of course, the type of flora that you will decorate your home. However, if your backyard needs some work, you may not be enjoying it to the fullest. You may be overwhelmed by the size of the landscaping project, especially is you try to do it all in one growing season. The solution? Sectional landscaping.

If you determine sections for your backyard and remodel only one section each year, you will be able to revamp your whole yard in a few years without breaking your back or spending a fortune. Sectional landscaping is particularly useful if you care on a budget. It will be easier to absorb $1,000 every year for 3 or 4 years than trying to spend $4,000-5,000 in one season.

The most important element of landscaping in section is the overall plan. Without one, you backyard will look like a patchwork of landscaping styles. Begin by sketching the existing permanent structures such as house, shed, deck, pool and trees. Now is a good time to take inventory of the existing plants and shrubs and decide which ones will not be part of the new landscape plan.

Play around with ideas. Make copies of your sketch and experiment with various options. Look for ideas in magazine or visit neighboring gardens. At this stage, the only limit is your imagination. If you have frequent backyard parties or family barbecues, keeping the layout of the yard open will work best. However, if you have a lot of space or don’t use the backyard much, incorporating an island bed, pond or walkways will create nice drama. Consider your lifestyle and the way you normally use your backyard and plan accordingly.

Here are some landscaping ideas to get you started.

Use plants as screens

This is particularly useful if your backyard is not fenced in. You may want to consider lining the edge of the yard with hawthorn, juniper, cedar, etc to create privacy but also to provide a beautiful backdrop for your future flower beds. A screen of evergreen will also protect your yard from drifting snow and heavy winds.

Creating a border flower bed

The biggest challenge when creating a border flower bed is choosing perennials that will complement each other in both color and height. With so many plants to choose from, you can really let your imagination run wild. However, consider planting an uneven number of the same plant for more visual appeal. Leave some space between the various perennials you choose for more impact. Do not overcrowd the plants and they need air and light to grow. Now would be a good time to pick up a gardening book listings various perennials to help you make your selection. You can also visit your local nursery and speak to the staff. They will be happy to help you.

Island Bed

To create an instant focal point in any backyard, an island bed is a great idea. It can planted in the middle of the yard or off to one side and is surrounded by a sea of grass. An island bed has the most impact in a large yard. The bed itself can vary in shape and side. Use your imagination! Just remember to scale the plants and place the tallest in the center and decrease the height as you make your way towards the edges.

Water Feature

What could be more relaxing than the still waters of a beautiful pond or the gentle splashing of a waterfall? Building a pond is easier than you may think. There are a number of preformed liners available on the market. Alternatively, if you want a pond with a specific shape, you can dig and build it yourself. Look online or at the bookstore for how to guides.

Before you go out and and buy hundreds of dollars worth of plants, you should visit a garden center for some advice on soil preparation and drainage. Bring a copy of your llandscapingplan with you and maybe a sample of your soil. You may also wish to bring extra cash in case you get carried away!

Common Landscaping Tools for Every Landscaper

For the avid do-it-yourself landscaper, the right tools are important. After all, if one wishes to save money on the expenses associated with having a well cared for yard, it is best to make sure that he or she has all of the tools necessary to create an attractive landscape. By understanding some of the most common tools used for basic landscaping needs, you can ensure that you have everything you need to keep your lawn in the best possible shape, bringing delight and distinction to your grounds, be they large or small.

Shovels, rakes, trowels, and hand cultivators. These are the most basic of tools when it comes to landscaping. Every home should be supplied with these basic implements. They make just about every landscaping endeavor possible. Shovels to remove sod and turn soil, as well as dig the holes necessary for fixtures like trees and hardscapes, Rakes are essential to smooth out planting beds and prepare ground for things like sod without packing the dirt. Trowels and hand cultivators allow you to perform minute work that requires more attention to detail. All of these tools are necessary to the proper functioning and care of a landscape.

Pruners and shears. These tools are used to improve the appearance of woody plants and trees. They keep plants from encroaching in other areas, and they also promote the overall health of the plants. They help maintain a neat appearance, and if you have topiary concerns, they are indispensable in maintaining a set shape. There are hand pruners, tools that help with the smaller branches and are easier to use, loppers for getting thicker branches that are to large for pruners, and even pruning saws that can help you with the toughest of branches. Hedge shears provide a way for hedges to be trimmed more conscientiously than with electric or gas-run trimmers (although these are widely available and can make maintaining hedges much easier).

Lawnmower. This is perhaps one of the most common and most obvious of landscaping tools. It is meant to keep the grass at a reasonable level, and to keep the lawn neat and healthy. Related to lawnmowers in the trimming department are things like weed wackers, which are very useful in keeping edges that can’t be cut by a mower nice and neat. Additionally, the use of some special machinery, designed to eliminate thick brush is useful to have on hand, even it is only in the form of a machine rented once a year.

Other tools of interest. Of course, there are specialty tools that may be needed depending upon on the features of your landscape. If you have a water fixture, it is important to make sure that you have the proper pumps and filters, and that you have little skimmers that can allow you to remove larger pieces of debris from the water. Automatic sprinklers can make watering the lawn and your other plants much easier, and you should have a garden hose for special watering needs. Regular household tools such as hammer and nails, levels, and drills can be helpful if you have built landscape features like patios, decks, pergolas, and trellises. They can also be useful in building things like containers and creating raised beds.

Wheelbarrow. A wheelbarrow will always be of infinite use for the avid landscaper and improver. Wheelbarrows are very useful for moving debris as well as bringing needed implements to their proper places. They haul dirt and bring in plants. They make it possible to for one person to carry a load that otherwise she or he would not be able to handle. For the serious landscaper, a wheelbarrow is indeed necessary.

When you have all of the tools necessary to take care of your landscape, then you are well rewarded for your hard work. Acquiring the more common tools can also save you money in the long run, as they can be used over and over again. Additionally, many of the more common landscape tools are fairly small in size and easy to store in a garage or a shed. As long as they are kept neatly arranged in place, they are easy to get to when needed, and not hard to find. Proper maintenance of you tools is important: keep them from becoming rusty, and make sure your lawnmower and other gas or electric implements are well oiled and always have plenty of gas. Proper care of your tools ensures that you will be able to properly care for your landscape.

Hiring A Professional Landscaper

Landscaping can be hard on your back, knees and your body. That is why many people hire a professional landscaper to implement their landscaping design.

Professional landscaping projects can be pricey, but you can take steps to reduce the cost. The best place is at the start — the landscape design.

Left to themselves, professional landscapers will likely produce an outrageously expensive plan, filled with exotic plants and wonderous features. Nice, but do you want to pay for all that?

Set Goals

What it is you really need? A place to barbeque? Solitude? Family activities?

Which area of the property would you like to work on? Knowing and defining your desired outcome is a major part in the money saving process.

Do Not Over-Do It

Don’t contradict the style of your house. Can you imagine a sky scraper in the middle of the city with a big barbeque lawn? If your house has a simple design, don’t go with a landscaping design that will overwhelm the flow.

Know Your Style

Formal style uses perfect, straight, geometrical shapes. The plants and bushes are pruned neatly and arranged closely.

Informal style goes against the straight line geometry. Furthermore, they do well without much sunlight, which causes them to be excellent choices for fundamental planting.

Here are some highly conventional evergreens to select from (in alphabetical order):

Cedar

The decorative Arbor Vitae, such as cedar, produces the flat evergreen branch frequently used in floral arrangements during the Christmas season. It thrives best in moist, protected areas. While it can be trimmed to any size or shape, untrimmed it will form a broad 35 to 50 feet tall pyramid.

Fir

Strong, resilient, and drought-resistant, the Douglas fir grows quickly and compactly. The best fir selection for wind breaks and privacy, its high pyramid makes a good lawn element. White fir has an attractive silvery color, while balsam fir, AKA the Christmas tree, is noted for its special fragrance and lustrous foliage.

Hemlock

The hemlock tree/shrub, with feathery foliage, is most effective when planted in a grove with others. The Canadian hemlock can be easily sheared for symmetrical effect.

Juniper

The tall species of juniper, for example the formal columnar juniper and the upright juniper, are quite useful in planting. As a spreading evergreen, the Pfitzer juniper is best used for banks, edgings and ground cover. Its green feathery foliage grows quickly, will tolerate crowding and at maturity stands 8 feet high, and up to 12 feet wide. Ground-covering junipers include creeping, prostrate, Sargent, and Waukegan.

Pine

The most generally known evergreen is the pine. Renowned for its long, soft, light silvery-green needles, the white pine can reach 80 feet when mature. In addition to the white pine, the red pine is great for backgrounds and wind breaks. A broad, compact tree, the ponderosa pine is used for protection and ornamental screens.

The Austrian pine (black pine), popular in the Midwest, has a rich, green color and spreading branches.

Spruce

Short and wide, with light blue-green needles, the white spruce reaches 70 feet and is good for general landscaping and privacy screens. Although it suffers in drought and heat, the Colorado blue spruce is a hardy tree. Red cedar, on the other hand, is a fine decortive evergreen for hedges and windbreaks because it withstands dry weather, plus the thick green foliage has a bronze color in winter.

Probably the most commonly planted wind breaks evergreen, the Norway spruce is hardy. A slow grower, it has short needles of dark green and is compact and pyramidal in shape. The Black Hills variety grows to 40 feet in time, and is hardy and drought-resistant.

Yew

With its thick, glossy needles and dense, upward-reaching branches, the yew is useful as both a shrub and tree. Although it grows well in sun and shade, it’s best used as a single feature against a wall of the garden rather than as foundation planting. The low-spreading bushy dwarf yew can be clipped, while other varieties such as the upright yew and Japanese yew are tapering or conical plants best used for hedges.

Protection

Since evergreens tend to be adversely affected by dry, hot summer weather, they should be watered every 10 to 14 days during this time of year. Be sure the water reaches at least 6 inches deep.

An excellent way to protect the evergreen from loss of water in dry weather is with a mulch of grass clippings or peat moss.

To help an evergreen thrive, pruning in the late spring is recommended, making sure that the inner branches will develop.

Gardening: Sustainable landscaping with Utah turfgrass

By Maggie Wolf

Special To The Tribune
Updated: 10/27/2009

Celebrating 30 years in business, Warren Bell's Biograss is Utah's oldest and largest sod farm.

With a family background in education, Bell and his partners nurtured a sod farm that cooperates with scientists working toward lawns that may be less brightly green in color, but more green environmentally. The company sells BioBlue, an improved version of Utah's culturally correct bright green Kentucky bluegrass, as well as four other types of sod.

At his farm near Bluffdale, Warren Bell watches Biograss vice president Don Heslop and his crew cut turf and stack it on pallets. "Those pallets are going to local garden centers and nurseries for fall sales," Bell said.

While it's too late in the year to plant grass seed, sod can be planted now and for several more weeks, while soil temperatures are between 65 degrees and 32 degrees. Autumn weather is ideal for cool season sods to establish roots quickly. Until true winter arrives, Biograss continues to sell, cut and supply sod for new lawns and lawn repair.

Bell considers the water-conservation movement a major influence on the turfgrass industry. More and more customers expect to buy improved sod types that require less irrigation, less pesticide and less labor input. Sustainable turfgrass varieties eventually pay for themselves by incurring fewer costs later on, the grower said.

"Some growers feel threatened by the messages telling people to use less water in their landscapes," Bell said. "But I think the xeriscape movement will have an overall positive effect for turf, because people will learn to select better varieties that don't need as much work as older varieties did."

Heslop offers a list of Utah gardeners' worst lawn-care mistakes -- and their remedies:

Watering every day » Irrigating too often keeps soil surface moist enough for weed seed germination and fungal growth. Water less often and allow the water to penetrate soil so grass roots grow deeper.

Not core aerating » Core aeration helps reduce thatch and soil compaction and allows more air to reach roots. Fall and spring are the times of year to core aerate lawns.

Cutting grass too short » Especially in summer, raise the mower deck to allow grass blades to grow taller. Taller grass tends to root deeper and can go longer between irrigation.

Using a string trimmer as an edger » String trimmers, when used as edgers, lead to bald edges on the lawn. When edges are bald, dirt is exposed and weeds infest.

Collecting and throwing away lawn clippings » Use a mulching mower and return clippings to your lawn. Green clippings are full on nitrogen, acting as a natural fertilizer.

Ignoring the soil beneath the turfgrass » You cannot grow healthy turf without healthy soil. Many new lawns fail due to poor soil preparation, especially near new construction where the soil is compacted.

Maggie Wolf, a certified professional horticulturist, gardens and consults in the Salt Lake Valley.

Bunnings slams the kitchen door on rival Woolies

HARDWARE giant Bunnings is opening a new front in the battle for the home improvement and outdoor living" sector.

With Australia's annual sales of kitchens and associated appliances estimated at $4.6 billion, such a market share would translate into about $640 million in annual revenue for Bunnings, where sales in 2008-09 amounted to $5.8bn.

The new range marks a continued expansion into the home improvement category for hardware chain, which has also added floor coverings, landscaping and pool fencing to its product offering in the past five years.

In broadening its product range, Bunnings has reduced the scope for Woolworths and joint venture partner Lowe's to lure shoppers to their new big-box hardware chain, scheduled to open its first store in late 2011.

Woolworths hardware boss Don Stallings said last month that his new chain would satisfy unmet needs in the Australian home improvement market, but declined to specify where these gaps might be found.

Woolworths has also hinted that its hardware chain may seek to lure new customers by having a more female-friendly atmosphere than existing competitors, but the size of the market opportunity might not be as great as they had hoped, with Mr Gillam saying yesterday that more than half of Bunnings' customers were female.

Mr Gillam said he did not expect that Bunnings would have greater difficulty in finding appropriate locations for new stores, despite Woolworths' stated intention to secure 150 sites within five years.

"It's always been pretty competitive ... there's lots of people who fight over good sites -- it's never a binary issue," he said.

Mr Gillam said Bunnings had recorded a 15 per cent rise in retail sales during the first two months of the new financial year, excluding the benefit of new store openings.

But he warned the strength of the company's performance was exaggerated by comparison with relatively weak sales for the same period a year earlier, and sales growth for the full year was expected to be more modest at between 5 and 9 per cent, excluding new store openings.

Is home landscaping different than other landscaping?

<span style="font-weight: bold; In fact, most people are going to need a little help with their landscaping, it is a good thing that it is easy to find a landscaping idea to use.
There are a few places that you can get some fantastic landscaping ideas and probably the best place is the internet. You will find hundreds of sites on the internet that will all have a great landscaping idea or two for you to take and make your own. It is important that you put a lot of though and consideration into the landscaping of your yard in the front and in the back so finding the perfect landscaping idea is essential to your success.

You should start by taking a walk around your property in order to get a good sense of what can be done. See how the drainage is and check out the slopes and levels of your property. This way you will be able to tell which landscaping idea is right for you right off the bat. The more you notice the easier things will be. It would be terrible to choose a landscaping idea and then start work only to find that it cannot be completed halfway through due to some aspect of your property. This is why you need to find out all that you can about each landscaping idea that you are contemplating using.

And before you choose the final landscaping idea that you are going to use take a little extra time to learn the basics of landscaping. This is imperative if you have never done any work like this before. If you re new to the whole world of landscaping then you might want to take out a book or two from the library. This way you do not have to pay for them and you will still get all that they have to offer. There is a lot of be gained from reading some good landscaping books, you might even find a landscaping idea in them.

If you know that you want to change the landscaping in your front yard and your back yard then you need to use a landscaping idea that will incorporate both of these. Your front and back yards should flow together, this will give you the best possible design so look at a landscaping idea that will give you this kind of harmony and you will have a better yard for it.

Not all landscaping software is created equal

There are some fantastic landscaping software programs that will help you to design the backyard of your dreams but there are also some landscaping software programs that are a complete waste of money. The trick is to find out which landscaping software programs are good before you purchase them.
Many of the landscaping software programs that are on the market for the regular consumer are not really very good. Some of them are just plain awful and to buy them is to throw your money down the drain. They will have terrible cartoonish drawings that are not clear and that will not do you any good at all. On the other hand there are some of the more expensive commercial grade landscaping software programs that will blow you away with their capabilities.

What you need to remember when you are using a landscaping software programs is that it is not going to do anything for you, it is only a tool for you to use to make your ideas a reality. So if you are wanting to buy some landscaping software so that you can have your yard designed for you then do not even bother. If on the other hand you have some great ideas and you want to get them laid out so that you can see if they are really as good as they seem then a good landscaping software programs might be for you after all.

Before you commit to buying any landscaping software try to get a demo. This will let you try out the program to see if it can even help you in what you want to achieve. You should try to choose a landscaping software program that has good graphics. The better the graphics are on your landscaping software the easier it will be fore you to visualize the end result of all your hard work. Remember that this is the goal of any landscaping software program. If the landscaping software is crap then you might be better off using the drawing programs that are already on your computer.

By getting a demo you will also be able to directly compare the different programs in terms of price. Lets face it, if there are two landscaping software programs and they look the same and they both have the tools that you need but one is cheaper, which one are you going to chose? The cheaper one of course. So check out the prices.

Irrigation and Tree Removal: Specialized Landscaping Contractors Can Help Restore and Revitalize Your Yard

The help of specialized landscape contractors like tree removal contractors and sprinkler installers can take your yard from unsightly to unbelievable. Just like any other hobby, proper tools and materials are the basic requirements for lawn upkeep; and it is essential that the correct tool be used for a particular job, for best results.

The price of the equipment is the first thing to come to mind – it is mostly ‘cheap vs. expensive’ situation. As a one-time investment, things like garden tools should always be of a good quality. Buying a cheap tool the first time may have you pay more in the sense that if the tool breaks after a few days also try checking out online store at Lawnmowerbuy, you would need to buy a replacement tool. So, it is always a sensible idea to go in for quality equipment in the first instance.

The garage or the potting shed can be the ideal place to stack away your basic garden equipment - like cultivators, trowels, pruning sheers and hedge trimmers. If left out in the open these tools may gather rust; and placing them on a cold cement floor, after use, should also be avoided. A pegboard put up against a wall is a good way of hanging up all your tools. Most gardening tools have sharp edges, so they should be put away with guards on them, especially if you have small children around.

Tools that are somewhat large – like shovels, rakes, and spades - need lot of storage room. However, to keep them in an organized manner, it is not a bad idea to buy a rack that can be mounted on the wall.

For huge and bulky tools - like wheelbarrows, power de-thatchers, aerators and garden rollers – you need to work out the cost of the tool vis-à-vis its use, and see if it is worth the purchase. As it is, whenever you require them, you can take these large tools on rent from Gardentractorbuy.com.

A watering hose are the clumsiest piece of garden equipment you ever can own. You would no this better if you’ve been involved in the painful struggle of coiling up a hose. To solve this problem in the best possible manner, buy a reel to store the hose on. Reels that can attach to the side of your house are any day a better buy than those that stand on the ground.

For the maintenance of a garden, weeding is by far one of the most prolonged and arduous jobs. Use of landscape fabric makes the task somewhat easy and less tiring. However, the use of plastic sheeting is a ‘no-no’, as it kills soil and plants in the garden.

For upkeep of a garden, you definitely need a lawnmower. The types of lawnmowers commonly in use are – the gas-powered or electric push mowers, or riding mowers for big gardens. In case you have a hillside to look after Electriclawnmowersbuy.com, ensure two things - a low center of gravity of the mower and suitable strength of the user.

Source: Free Articles

Dimensions Are Important to Your Landscaping

For the most interest, you need a variety of sizes and shapes of plants.

Designing an attractive planting around the walls of your house and through the yard is something that most homeowners really want to accomplish. Not just because having great curb appeal is vital to the largest investment most people make in their lives. This is home, your kingdom on earth so making it lovely and interesting is just part of owning a home. At the same time, you want your yard to be low maintenance and easy to care for. After all, spare time should be relaxing and not filled with more work.

Different heights, widths and textures of plants are needed.

You will want some soft loosely shaped shrubs and trees to compliment those that are more tightly packed with foliage. Big leaf plants must balance and accent those with medium and finer foliage. Then you will want different colors of leaves as well, because the result of not taking color into account creates one big blob of plants life. The other common mistake made in selecting plants for home landscapes is having nothing but evergreen shrubs and trees. Variety is the spice of life and should be found in the landscape.

Not many people want to spend weekends shearing their shrubs.

While some geometric shaped plants are wonderful for contrast and added interest, it makes more sense to increase the low maintenance good looks of yourlandscape with careful selection. All plants have expected mature sizes and will not remain the petite life form that you purchased. Planning ahead decreases your spare time work load and increases the beauty of your yard. The idea of it being necessary to place a bush that gets 8' tall and 8' wide beneath a window is absurd. You and this shrub will be at constant odds over the space above the window sill.

Instead of fighting their personality, learn to work with them for the best outcome overall.

Don't pick the wrong plant to fit the space requirements. Whacked up shrubs are not attractive. One of the most difficult spots for every homeowner is the ones where you need something tall and very narrow. Most narrow plant's natural shape will be 3/4 to 1.5 times as wide as they are tall. When you only have 2' between the sidewalk and the wall, planting a 5-6' tall shrub is a real problem.

In these spots the Sky Pencil Holly is exactly what you need.

Here you have the perfect narrow evergreen shrub to create a column of leafy interest without any shearing at all. Better yet, at full maturity the Sky Pencil Japanese Holly will not exceed 2' wide though it can grow up to 6' tall. The dark, lustrous green foliage of the sky pencil holly is attractive where ever you place it. It is tall enough for good height dimension yet short enough to not grow into the eaves or cover the garage lamps. The Sky Pencil Holly is a slow growing upright shrub with a natural shape like a column.

There are many uses in your yard for this compact Japanese holly shrub.

The Sky Pencil Holly makes an excellent linear specimen plant in the center of a ground cover or flower bed. It can be planted in pairs to mark the opening into the back yard or play up the steps to the front door. You will love the versatility of the Sky Pencil Japanese Holly. Every home has a place that the narrow upright sky pencil holly bush can really make a statement.
Source: http://EzineArticles.com/

Outdoor Landscaping and Hot Tubs

Owning an outdoor hot tub may inspire further additions. It is very common for owners to create an enjoyable setting around their spa. To ensure optimal implementation of a tub and maintenance of its surroundings, proper attention to landscaping is warranted.

Complement the hot tub

Many do not realize the added accessories associated with spa ownership. The addition of a spa umbrella can prolong time spent enjoying the tub. Some owners establish a spa bar to complement their tub. Adding a tub to an outdoor area can create another "room" of the house; building the ambiance is facilitated by owner creativity.

Add to the spa's surroundings

A hot tub offers many benefits in itself, but in addition, other options exist that can enhance the outdoor ambiance. Many people decide to implement gazebos, patio bars, and outdoor saunas. Geography may influence the decision for elaboration. Floridian spa owners can enjoy their spas all year, while someone living in Philadelphia may "close shop" for the winter months.

Consider upkeep

Maintenance of a landscape is influenced by the plant life involved. Ask gardeners and plant specialists about how often particular plants and bushes need watering and treatment. Just as a wooden spa needs more cleaning than fiberglass or acrylic spas, some plant life may be in need of regular attention.

Extra cleaning of the hot tub

The presence of a spa creates many landscaping opportunities. Unfortunately, some bushes, trees, and plants shed a variety of debris through the air. Spa covers and hot tub chemicals help keep tubs clean, but certain garden entities make the job more laborious. Ask a landscaper or gardener about potential, floral purchases.

Keeping insects away

The presence of bugs is another landscaping factor to consider in conjunction to a hot tub purchase. Ask a gardener or landscaper about particular bushes, plants, and trees regarding the presence of insects. While many options exist, one must decipher between flora that attracts, repels, or has no influence on insects.
Source: http://EzineArticles.com

Home Improvement - Landscaping

Backyard Landscaping Ideas - Easy Ideas For Breathtaking Backyard Landscape

Is your home backyard dull and boring to the eyes? Then it needs some major remodeling. If you are really interested in redeveloping a backyard into a beautiful landscaped garden then there are some easy steps involved that can do this quickly.

Many people think that developing a garden in the backyard is an expensive affair. But it's really not. With a few basic landscaping elements you can have a dull backyard converted into a soothing green area where you can enjoy quality life with your family members.

What you can do is convert the whole backyard area into smaller areas and start visualizing it for redevelopment. If the idea of managing the complete area frightens you then let's deal with this one step at a time. Each individual area can be a grid of simple rectangles or squares running across and along the backyard. The lines forming the grid can become pathways to move into internal areas.

Once the pathways have been finalized you can visit the local nursery store and simply ask for help. Ask the expert their to give you a list of the following types of plants with their costs.

1) Lawn beds
2) Shrubs along the pathways
3) Flowerbed plants
4) Crawlers
5) Trees

Also ask about their specific requirements such as shade loving/non shade loving, the quantity of water they require etc.

The next steps involve locating the positions of these plants in the garden layout. You can use chalk powder to do this you in less than an hour. While finalizing the plant positions make sure to use some creativity and use colorful plants that will create a wonderful display of colors when they bloom. Endless options are available for you to choose from in this planning stage.

Walkways cab be built with a variety of materials such as
1) Gravel
2) Tiles
3) Stone tiles
4) Bricks with interlocking arrangements
5) Plain sand

If you are ready to spend some money even planting a pond or a fountain a good idea as this will greatly enhance the visual quality of your garden. Having statues in you garden with built-in lighting arrangement is another great idea to go for.

Try to cover most of the area with green cover to keep the surrounding cooler. If you don't want to experiment too much on plat types then a simple lawn with flowering plants in the periphery is also a good idea. The lawn can have a central paved area with a coffee table and probably an umbrella to cover it.

This can become a favorite place to have morning tea and some chat with your family members. if space allows a small area with swing set or a seesaw can be installed so that kids are happy too.

Thus simple visualization can easily transform a dull backyard landscaping ideas into beautiful retreat of your own. With careful planning and little professional help this should not be an expensive affair too.
Source: http://www.articlesbase.com

Palm Trees a Perfect Choice for Landscaping

Most of the gardens with landscaping concept usually choose fixtures that are Patio and Porch Lightning. A small garden can include the traditional cottage garden or a contemporary spot at the back of a semi-detached situated amongst a conurbation; inner city roof terraces also lend themselves to landscape designs for small spaces. Invariably, for those with busy lives, perhaps with a full-time job and family to juggle, maintaining a garden comes way down on your list of priorities. So it is important that any landscape designs for small spaces take this factor into account. Naturally, that same family you are juggling will often need to use your small garden for their own individual agendas: a place to store the family bikes, somewhere tranquil for al fresco eating and a safe place for your children to play. Landscape designs for small spaces need to take all these activities into account.

Garden Design Requirements

To get the best from any garden design, you are going to want to write your ideas set down so that you can play around with different ideas. There are lots of computer-based programs you can use for drawing, although pen and paper are often just as good for the initial layout ideas. If you are intending to employ a professional garden designer you need to locate one whom you are able to work with and who is prepared to work within your overall budget while, at the same time, implementing your ideas. Before you get to the point of employing a professional, make sure you know what you realistically want from your garden and how much you can realistically afford to lay out on putting your ideas into practice.

Don't forget that you will need somewhere to store your summer garden furniture, your family bikes, the lawn mower and all the other paraphernalia that goes with outdoor living. Another thing you need to consider is whether you want your garden lit and, if so, the kind of lighting you intend to use. Planning permission is something you must remember not to overlook with any neighbourhood objections taken into account. Neighbors opinions are important when it comes to landscape designs for small spaces. After all, you don't want to fall out with your neighbor and, if their objections are particularly valid, you could find that your planning application could be refused.

Plants as an Integral Part of the Design

Keeping plant colors to just two or three can encourage your landscape designs for small spaces to be more effective in terms of an illusion of space and an overall greater impact. Rather than choosing plants with a wild array of different colors entirely, work your way through the different hues associated with a couple of base colours. Add texture and height to compensate for your lack of ground space: this will provide additional interest and carry the eye upwards. Soften the backdrop of tall walls and fences with espalier shrubs or fruit trees. The art of espalier has enabled even the smallest patio to provide room for a fruit tree or two to grow.

The key to using plants as integral parts of landscape designs for small spaces is to repeat just a few varieties. For instance, you can mix and match apple, pear and plum trees espaliered against your boundary walls then, following your choice of colors, pick just two or three varieties of plants and stick with those, planting them within your design to maximum impact.

Source: http://www.articlesbase.com

Privacy Policy for http://homeimprovementlandscaping.blogspot.com/

If you require any more information or have any questions about our privacy policy, please feel free to contact us by email at kedarah@hotmail.com.

At http://homeimprovementlandscaping.blogspot.com/, the privacy of our visitors is of extreme importance to us.
